A large stock of 'high protein' biscuits being transported to Killinochchi by World Food Programme (WFP) has been apprehended by Medawachchiya Police.
The stock of 'high protein' biscuits was discovered when the police searched a vehicle belonging to WFP bearing Reg. No. WP-GK-5578, which was being driven to Killinochchi without any permission from the Ministry of Defense or from any other government authority.
According to defense sources consuming one of these biscuits would allow a person to remain without any other food for nearly ten hours and the biscuits are mainly used by troops engaged in guerilla warfare.
There had been many instances when substances used in warfare smuggled in by organizations that come under the purview of the UNO had been apprehended by Security Forces. Recently, a stock of war-rations smuggled in by UNICEF was apprehended by customs.
Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said the Army and Police manning the Medawachchiya road barrier detected the stock of high protein biscuits at 9.20 pm yesterday. 39,800 packets were found in the container. Documents related to the stock had not been produced. It was claimed that the stocks belonged to the World Food Programme. These are in police custody until the documents are examined. The container belonged to Trico of Bloemendhal Road Colombo. The Military Spokesman said inquiries are in progress.
