A walk to salute the valiant soldiers for their Kilinochchi victory was held near the Parliamentary Roundabout this morning. This massive walk commenced from two venues, one from opposite the Kotte Municipal Council and the other from Kaduwela Pradeshiya Sabha. The workers, the Maha Sangha, Parliamentarians, Provincial Councilors and Heads of Institutions participated. A notable feature was the participation of massive crowds in this walk. Representatives of various Trade Unions representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party joined it. Our reporters said that more people from various parts of the country participated. The participants extended their blessings to the war heroes so that they will have more strength for the liberation of Mullaitivu and Elephant Pass. Meanwhile the demonstrators expressed their protest to politicians and various organizations issued statements belittling the Kilinochchi victory of the war heroes. They burnt effigies of such persons. The need for the support of everyone to the programme for the liberation of the motherland from terrorism, mooted by the Government putting aside all differences, was underscored. Seven women soldiers, who pursued parachute training for the first time in the Air Force history, have passed out. (15/02/2008) The event was organised at the Katunayake Air Force Base. They received training under the Air Force 14th parachute course for two months. In the meantime, 10 soldiers of the Air Force Regiment Special Force, two sailors of the Navy and five members of the Regiment Air Force also passed out after parachute training. A notable feature is the inclusion of a medical officer in this group. The passing out ceremony took place under the patronage of Air Force Commander Air Marshal Roshan Goonetilleke. These new pass outs will have the opportunity of rendering a service through parachutes during an emergency. 360 had so far successfully completed this training course at the Katunayake Air Base.

Troops from 55 Division advancing from Muhamalai and Kilali captured the LTTE's Forward Defence Line and recovered 17 dead bodies of Tigers. The LTTE was in total disarray in this front. However, in the next front at Nagarkovil, troops from the 53 Division who attempted to charge the LTTE FDL was beaten back heavily in open terrain by long range artillery and mortar fire. Troops who managed to enter the LTTE trenches were killed in booby traps planted by the Tigers. Although the 55 Division had captured the Tiger FDL, the 53 Division's bungling made it impossible to link the line and troops withdrew after several hours with the dead bodies of Tigers, some of which was handed over to Jaffna police yesterday to be given to ICRC. The 53 Division, comprising only regular infantry (533/534) also includes the Mechanized Infantry and Air Mobile Brigades. Some sources have claimed 53 Div comprises of Commandos and Special Forces. This is not true. These two specialized Regiments comes under the Army Commander's Reserve since a few years back. Who did this? The defeat at Nagarkovil yesterday is the 3rd comprehensive defeat in Jaffna in recent times. Two of the three operations were led by Brigadier Samantha Sooriyabandara. Despite yesterday's loss and another loss many months ago where two Main Battle Tanks were lost due to poor leadership, Brigadier Sooriyabandara is to be appointed Defence Attache to the Sri Lanka Embassy in the United States, highly placed sources told .

"The Government is once again taking decisive action to protect Canadians from terrorism and to safeguard our nation's security," said Minister Day. "Listing the WTM, which is the leading front organization for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Canada, is an important step in ensuring our safety and security in the global fight against terrorism". The decision to list the WTM meets the legal threshold set out in the Criminal Code, which requires the existence of reasonable grounds to believe that the entity has knowingly participated in or facilitated a terrorist activity or is knowingly acting on behalf of, at the direction, or in association with such an entity. The listing of the WTM is meant to support the Tamil Community of Canada, which consists of law-abiding and hard working people who have left their country of origin to build a better life for themselves and their families in Canada. The Government is taking this step to help ensure that Canadians, including the Tamil community are protected from the activities of this organization. The WTM, created in 1986, is the leading front organization for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Canada. The various offices of the WTM in Canada transfer funds to bank accounts in Sri Lanka meant for the LTTE. The leadership of the WTM acts at the direction of leaders of the LTTE. WTM representatives canvas areas in Canada with large Tamil populations demanding large donations on behalf of the LTTE. Refusals to contribute often lead to threats and intimidation. The objective of the listing is to help combat terrorist activities, including impeding terrorist financing. For example, the listing prohibits all persons in Canada as well as every Canadian abroad from knowingly dealing with assets owned or controlled by the WTM. In addition, it is an offence to knowingly participate in, contribute to, or facilitate certain activities of a listed entity. Other related offences are set out in the Criminal Code. The listing process requires extensive analysis of security and/or criminal information and intelligence to ensure that the decision to list meets the legal threshold. Liberation of Tamil Tigers has been listed as a Terrorist organization by over 32 states, a 2008 FBI report showed that LTTE is more brutal than Al-Qaeda and is considered the number one terrorist group in the world. LTTE has been responsible for killing of innocent civilians, suicide bombings, political assassinations, child recruitment, drug trafficking, credit card/passport fraud, organized crime, use of violence, extortion and abductions.
