President says he will not hesitate to proscribe the LTTE
President Rajapakse has warned that the LTTE outfit will be permanently wiped out from the history books if it did not release all innocent Tamil civilians detained by them in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu by the beginning of next year..
Pointing out that he was not a communalist who satisfies separatism, the President emphasised that his sole aim is to build a unitary country where all communities can live in dignity. The President emphasised that he is not prepared to go for a ceasefire supporting terrorism. He wished to convey a clear message to the LTTE to release all innocent civilians detained by them with the dawn of the New Tear. Or else, he pointed out that he will not hesitate to not only proscribe the outfit but to wipe it out from the history books. The President was addressing a function at the Presidential Secretariat this morning. He apprised multi religious leaders, political leaders, senior government officials, artistes, businessmen and trade union representatives as well as university lecturers of challenges confronting the country in the midst of world economic recession and world terrorist campaigns.Further expressing views on this occasion, the President opined that he, as a leader elected with the mandate of the people, was bound to safeguard the people of the country. He queried as to whom priority should be given whether to about four percent using petrol cars or about 92 percent mainly using public transport and the poor using kerosene. The Cabinet is discussing this matter and a decision had to be taken with responsibility. Decisions cannot be taken to become popular. He said a 500 percent tax is levied from luxury cars. Some may query as to a formula for cars if there is one for petrol. A 300 percent tax is levied from cigarettes and also for alcohol. It should not be forgotten that it is with the income derived from taxes that the Government was providing free school text books, meeting health facilities in hospitals and providing milk food for children. His onus is to mete out justice to the masses and the motherland. The President stressed that he cannot take decisions to become popular.
