The remains of the late veteran politician Anura Bandaranaike will be taken to the Parliament Complex this morning (17/03/2008) around 11.30 a.m for MPs to pay their last respects. After two hours, it will be taken to the Bandaranaike ancestral home in Horagolla. The funeral will take place on March 19th. Anura Bandaranaike passed away last afternoon (Mar. 16th) in his Visumpaya residence. He was 59 at the time of his death following a brief illness. Anura was a former cabinet minister, opposition leader and Speaker of Parliament.

1953 ජනවාරි 11 වැනිදා උපත ලැබූ අමාත්‍ය ජෙයරාජ් ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතා මූලික අධ්‍යාපනය ලැබුවේ, මීගමුව ආවේ මරියා කන්‍යාරාමය සහ මාරිස්ටෙලා යන විද්‍යාලයෙන්ගෙනි. ළමා කාලයේ සිටම දක්ෂ කථිකයෙකුවූ ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතා ශ්‍රී ලංකා නීති විද්‍යාලයේ ශිෂ්‍යයෙකුව සිටියදී කථිකත්වය වෙනුවෙන් ජුරියේ විශේෂ රීදී පදක්කම පවා දිනා ගත්‌තේය. 1977 දී නීතිඥයෙකු ලෙස සිය වෘත්තීය ජීවිතය ඇරඹූ ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතා දක්ෂ නීතිඥයෙකු ලෙස සිය හැකියාව ප්‍රකට කළේය. 1983 දී කටාන ආසනයේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා නිදහස් පක්ෂ ප්‍රධාන සංවිධායකවරයා බවට පත්වූ ජෙයරාජ් ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතා 1989 වසරේදී පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට තේරී පත්වූයේ ගම්පහ දිස්ත්‍රික්කය නියෝජනය කරමිනි. 1993 දී ශ්‍රී ලංකා නිදහස් පක්ෂයේ දේශපාලන මණ්ඩලයට තේරී පත්වූ ඔහු පක්ෂයේ නියෝජ්‍ය ලේකම්වරයා ද විය. 1994 දී දෙවන වරටත් පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට තේරීපත්වූ ඒ මහතා මුදල්, වාර්ගික කටයුතු හා ජාතික ඒකාබද්ධතා නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍යවරයා ලෙස පත් විණි. පසුව එම වසරේදීම ඔහු සැලසුම් ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීමේ හා ජාතික ඒකාබද්ධතා හා වාර්ගික කටයුතු නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍යවරයා ලෙස පත් විය. 2000 වසරේදී යලිත් තුන්වන වරටත් පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට තේරීපත්වූ ජෙයරාජ් ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතා පාර්ලිමේන්තු තේරීම් කමිටු ගණනාවක සභාපතිවරයා මෙන්ම නියෝජිතයෙකු ලෙස ද ක්‍රියා කළේය. 2004 වසරේදී යළි පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට තේරීපත්වූ ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතාට හිමිවුයේ වෙළෙද, වාණිජ , පාරිභෝගික කටයුතු අමාත්‍යධුරයයි. එතැන් සිට ඔහු පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ ආණ්ඩු පක්ෂයේ ප්‍රධාන සංවිධායකවරයා ද විය. වසර 2005 ජනාධිපතිවරණයෙන් අනතුරුව වෙ‌ළෙද, වාණිජ, පාරිභෝගික කටයුතු හා අලෙවි සංවර්ධන මෙන්ම මහාමාර්ග අමාත්‍යධුරයද ජෙයරාජ් ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතාට පිරිනැමිණි. ශ්‍රි ලංකාව නියෝජනය කරමින් ජාත්‍යන්තර සම්මේලන ගණනාවකට සහභාගිවී ඇති ජෙයරාජ් ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතා ලෝක වෙළෙද සංවිධානයේ 6 වැනි අමාත්‍ය සමුළුව මෙන්ම 1994 මෝල්ටාහි පැවැති පොදුරාජ්‍ය මණ්ඩලීය වෙළෙද අමාත්‍යවරුන්ගේ සම්මේලනයේදී ද ශ්‍රී ලංකාව නියෝජනය කළේය. ජෙයරාජ් ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ අධ්‍යාපන සංවර්ධන පදනමේ සභාපතිවරයා ලෙස කටයුතු කළ ඔහු සෑම වසරකම දිළිදු දරුවන්ට ශිෂ්‍යත්ව 1500 ක් පිරිනැමීමේ වැඩසටහනක්ද ක්‍රියාත්මක කරමින් විශාල වශයෙන් සමාජ සුබසාධන කටයුතුවලද නිරත විය. එවන් පුළුල් වූ සිය සමාජ හා දේශපාලන මෙහෙවර අවසන් කරමින් අමාත්‍ය ජෙයරාජ් ප්‍රනාන්දුපුල්ලේ මහතා අද (2008 අප්‍රේල් 06) සිය දිවියෙන් සමුගත්තේය.

Renowned musician Premasiri Khemadasa bids farewell

Anura Bandaranaike, had been in active politics for 35 years and he has represented Parliament for 31 years. He was the only son of two former Prime Ministers S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Born on 15th February 1949, he had his academic studies at Royal College Colombo. He holds a Degree on Political Science and History from the Oxford University. He served as the Advisor on Foreign Affairs when his mother was the Prime Minister from 1970 to 77. Mr. Bandaranaike entered Parliament for the first time contesting the Nuwara Eliya-Maskeliya seat during the 1977 election from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Mr. Bandaranaike was appointed as the Opposition Leader after the 1983 general election and held several Ministerial portfolios in addition to being elected as Speaker under the UNP regime in the Fourth Parliament with the blessings of both government and opposition members. After rejoining the SLFP, he held a number of Ministerial portfolios. Mr. Bandaranaike was the only brother of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga. He discharged an exemplary service in Sri Lankan politics following the footsteps of his father and mother. Anura Bandaranaike who was engaged in active politics for 35 years, had represented Parliament for 31 years.
